Cité, Ile de la

( Do not miss )

The Ile de la Cité is not only the historic centre of Paris, it is also a place of exceptional natural beauty and an architectural gem.
The Celtic tribe the Parisii settled on the largest island in an area known as Lutetia, which under the Romans expanded onto the Left Bank of the Seine. Nevertheless, the island (the Cité), which the king of the Franks chose as his capital in 508, remained for 1,000 years the seat of royal, judicial and religious power. During the Middle Ages, the Ile de la Cité was an important intellectual centre as its cathedral schools attracted students from all over Europe. Even after the kings of France left the royal palace for larger premises on the right bank, the Cité lost none of its symbolic importance and remains to this day the 'guardian' of 2,000 years of history.
The appearance of the Cité has, of course, changed considerably over the years; in the 19th century, the centre of the island was cleared and the vast square in front of Notre-Dame Cathedral created. At the other end of the island, the Conciergerie and Sainte-Chapelle are the only remaining parts of the medieval royal palace, now incorporated in the huge Palais de Justice.
