Concorde, Place de la
(
Do not miss
)
This is undoubtedly the most impressive square in Paris: its stately elegance, its size and its magnificent views are simply
breathtaking. Built in the mid-18th century to celebrate Louis XV 'the beloved', it was designed by Gabriel who erected two
classical pavilions on either side of the rue Royale; its octagonal shape is emphasised by eight allegorical statues representing
major French cities.
The pink granite obelisk from Luxor, offered to the French nation by the viceroy of Egypt in 1836, is at the centre of the
square, flanked by two graceful fountains. Two magnificent vistas open up: one towards the Champs-Elysées and Le Louvre beyond
the beautiful gates of the Jardin des Tuileries, the other towards the Madeleine at the end of the rue Royale and the Assemblée
Nationale across the pont de la Concorde.
