Hôtel De Ville

( Worth Seeing )

The town hall of the city of Paris has been standing on this site since the 14th century. Destroyed by fire during the Paris Commune in 1871, it was rebuilt almost straight away in neo-Renaissance style. On the exterior are 136 statues representing famous historic figures.
Near by stands the 52m-high Tour St-Jacques, the only remaining part of a demolished church. In 1648, Pascal used the tower to verify his experiments on the weight of air. Later, a meteorological station was set up at the top and the tower became the property of the city of Paris.
On the east side of the town hall, the Eglise St-Gervais-St-Protais is a splendid example of a successful blend of Flamboyant Gothic and classical styles.
