Montparnasse

( Highly Recommended )

Fashions change quickly in artistic circles and, soon after the turn of the century, young artists and writers left Montmartre to settle on the Left Bank, in an area which had been known as Montparnasse since medieval times. Modigliani, Chagall, Léger and many others found a home and a studio in La Ruche, the counterpart of the Bateau-Lavoir in Montmartre. They were later joined by Russian political refugees, musicians and, between the wars, American writers of the 'lost generation', among them Hemingway. They met in cafés along the boulevard Montparnasse, which have since become household names: La Closerie des Lilas, La Rotonde, Le Select, La Coupole and Le Dôme.
Since the 1960s the district has been systematically modernised and a new business complex built south of the boulevard. The 200m-high Tour Montparnasse stands in front of one of the busiest stations in Paris. The tower's 56th and 59th floors are open to the public and offer a restaurant and panoramic views. To the south-west, the circular place de Catalogne, surrounded by rows of glass columns, was designed by Ricardo Bofill.
