Quartier Latin

( Highly Recommended )

This lively district remains to this day the undisputed kingdom of Parisian students. Situated on the Left Bank between the Carrefour de l'Odéon and the Jardin des Plantes, it was known in medieval times as the 'Montagne Ste-Geneviève' after the patron saint of Paris, and was later given the name of 'Quartier Latin' because Latin was spoken at the university until the late 18th century.
The Sorbonne, the most famous French university college, was founded in 1257; the present building dates from the late 19th century when well-known artists such as Puvis de Chavannes decorated the interior. The adjacent 17th-century church is a model of Jesuit style.
The Church of St-Etienne-du-Mont, dating from the late 15th century, combines Gothic Flamboyant and Renaissance styles.
