Sainte-Chapelle
(
Do not miss
)
The full splendour of this magnificent Gothic chapel can only be appreciated from inside, as Sainte-Chapelle is unfortunately
closely surrounded by the Palais de Justice buildings. Commissioned by Saint-Louis to house the Crown of Thorns and a fragment
of the true Cross, it was built in less than three years by Pierre de Montreuil (who also worked on Notre-Dame) and consecrated
in 1248.
The building consists of two chapels, the lower one intended as a parish church for the palace staff and the upper one reserved
for the royal family. The latter is a striking example of technical prowess: walls have been replaced by 15m-high stained-glass
panels linked by slender pillars which also support the vaulting. The stained-glass windows, which cover an area of more than
600sq m, are mainly original and illustrate scenes from the Old and New Testaments.
