A Walk Through Le Marais

Picturesque streets and carefully restored architectural gems make this an enjoyable walk.

Walk north from place de l'Hôtel de Ville along rue des Archives.

The Eglise des Billettes, on your right, has the last remaining medieval cloister in Paris.

Turn right into rue Ste-Croix de la Bretonnerie, then third left and first right.

Rue des Rosiers, at the heart of the Jewish quarter, is lined with a colourful array of traditional shops and restaurants.

Turn left into rue Pavée then left again.

Rue des Francs-Bourgeois is the liveliest street in the Marais, with unusual boutiques selling clothes, antiques and trinkets.

Turn right into rue des Archives, then first right and continue to the tiny place de Thorigny.

The Musée Picasso is on the left; on the right stands the Musée de la Serrure housing a remarkable collection of keys, locks and door knockers (Hours: 10-12 and 2-5; closed Mon morning, Sat, Sun).

Walk down rue Elzévir on the right, past the Musée Cognacq-Jay then left up the rue Payenne and right down rue Sévigné.

This whole area is delightfully peaceful, with gardens surrounded by railings. Have a look inside the courtyard of the Hôtel Carnavalet.

Walk east to the end of rue des Francs-Bourgeois.

Soak in the unique atmosphere of the place des Vosges. Come out from the southern end.

Turn right in the rue St-Antoine. The walk ends in front of Eglise St-Paul-St-Louis.
