Changing Fashion

Hip clubs come and go and DJs move around from one to the other, but some things remain constant: nothing really starts before midnight, some clubs have an entry fee which includes one drink, others charge more for their drinks. It pays to be smartly dressed to get past the door people; jeans and trainers are out.

Free Concerts

The municipality of Paris organises free concerts in the city's parks and gardens between May and September (programmes from the Office de Tourisme de Paris). Organ concerts on the 3rd Sunday of every month in selected venues (Phone: 01 42 76 67 00). Some church concerts are free, for instance in the Madeleine and the American Church on Sunday and in Saint-Merri on Saturday and Sunday. Concerts broadcast from La Maison de Radio-France are open to the public and the entrance is free (information and reservations, Phone: 01 42 30 22 22).

Cinemas and Theatres

There are some 350 cinema screens in Paris. Most large cinemas show several films at once. On Friday and Saturday nights, there are long queues outside cinemas in the Champs-Elysées and the Grands Boulevards. Paris is also well stocked with theatres from the grand Comédie Française (Phone: 01 40 15 00 15), where French classics are performed, to the tiny local theatre where contemporary plays either hit the limelight or flop into oblivion.

La Haute Vallée de Chevreuse

The Parc Naturel Regional de la Haute Vallée de Chevreuse was created in 1984 over an area of 25,000 ha, including 12,000 ha of woodland. It is criss-crossed by footpaths offering many opportunities for walks of 11/2 to 3 hours. Information and itineraries are available from the Maison du Parc in Chevreuse.

Fountains in the Parc de Versailles

Louis XIV wanted all the fountains in the park to work simultaneously. In order to achieve this, Le Nôtre worked for ten years with several engineers, dug 60km of channels and laid 11km of underground piping linking 15 small lakes and 8 artificial ones!
