Development of Porto Founded in pre-Roman times, the city gave its name to the country, and was the birthplace of Prince Henry the Navigator in 1394. Traditionally liberal, its residents have always had a strong rebellious streak, which goes well with the city's industrious and down-to-earth image. Porto is a refreshing antidote to the faded elegance of Lisbon - a bustling city lying at the center of Portugal's most important economic area, its layout inextricably entwined with the history of the port trade.
