Development of Porto

Development of Porto Founded in pre-Roman times, the city gave its name to the country, and was the birthplace of Prince Henry the Navigator in 1394. Traditionally liberal, its residents have always had a strong rebellious streak, which goes well with the city's industrious and down-to-earth image. Porto is a refreshing antidote to the faded elegance of Lisbon - a bustling city lying at the center of Portugal's most important economic area, its layout inextricably entwined with the history of the port trade. Grandiose buildings testify to 18th- and 19th-century wealth, but the true spirit of the city lies in the maze of narrow streets below the cathedral, the old docks and the waterfront houses. Pockets throughout the city are endowed with azulejo decoration (glazed ceramic tiles). |
