Porto is the place to track down northern handicraft specialties, fine port, locally made shoes and the village of Minho's traditional gold filigree jewelry. The city's wonderfully old-fashioned stores, many of which still retain their early 20th-century facades and details, are worth a visit even if you're not buying. Highlights include the Lello and Irmão bookstore on Rua do Carmelitas, with its superb double staircase and somber wooden paneling, and Cardoso Cabeleiro on Rua do Bonjardim, a shop specializing in wigs and toupees. Similar stores cluster together in Porto, so you'll find streets packed with hardware stores, seed merchants, jewelers and linen stores. Marques Soares, a chic department store on Rua do Carmelitas, carries exquisite leather goods.
