Praça da Ribeira

The waterfront Praça da Ribeira (Ribeira Square) is the focal point of the Ribeira district, by far the most atmospheric area of Porto and designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Many of the buildings - arcaded neo classic constructions - were erected between 1776 and 1782. Although you can approach the area by descending the steep Rua de Alfândega past Casa do Infante (House of the Prince), Prince Henry the Navigator's reputed birthplace, the easiest way is to walk through the warren of canyon-like streets tumbling down to the river from the cathedral.

There's no better place to experience historic Porto than in this district, which has plenty of bars and restaurants. While you're here, visit the Centro Regional de Artes Tradicinais (Regional Center for Arts and Crafts), selling a wonderful range of traditional northern handicrafts.
