Porto's Sé (Cathedral) stands high above the steep slopes leading to the river. Built in the 12th century as a fortress church, it was extensively altered in the 1700s in the baroque style, although the vast silver altarpiece in the north transept dates from the mid-16th century. The two-story cloisters are more appealing than the cathedral itself; the solid granite lines are enlivened with beautiful tiles, and there are good views over the town. A museum in the treasury houses archeological finds from pre-Roman to Gothic times, plus liturgical objects from the 15th to 19th centuries.
