Vila Nova de Gaia

Officially a separate municipality, Vila Nova de Gaia lies across the Douro river from Porto itself. Its name is synonymous with port, for until 1987 all port had to be matured here to be so named. The riverside slopes are dominated by the solid granite buildings of the port warehouses, or lodges. There are many oportunities for free tours and tastings. This is the place to buy port; the white aperitif variety - subtly sweet yet dry - is hard to find overseas. The huge complex high above the river is the old monastery of Serra do Pilar, now a military installation and closed to the public.
