One of Prague's loveliest religious buildings, the convent was founded in 1234 by Agnes, sister of King Wenceslas I. St Agnes introduced the Order of Poor Clares into Bohemia and was the first abbess. Completed by the end of the 14th century and sacked by the Hussites in the 15th, the convent was eventually dissolved in 1782. Restoration work has only recently been completed. The most impressive building is the Church of the Holy Saviour, an outstanding example of early Gothic architecture. Note the capitals which are decorated with reliefs showing rulers of the Přemyslid dynasty. During the restoration the burial place of some of these kings and queens was unearthed, including the tomb of King Wenceslas in the Church of St Francis (which is now used as a concert venue).
The convent is a branch of the National Gallery and contains an exhibition of 19th- century Czech painting, mainly landscapes and portraits although there are some evocative scenes of turn-of-the-century Prague. The leading artist of the period, Josef Mánes, is well represented. Other artists who feature here include Mikuláš Aleš, the sculptor Josef Myslbek, Karel Postl, Antonin Machek, Josef Navrátil and Julius Mařák.
