St George's Convent houses the National Gallery's collection of Czech Gothic and baroque art, and adjoining it is the Basilica, one of the oldest religious foundations in Prague, dating back to 920 and reconstructed in its present Romanesque form after a fire in 1142 (the baroque façade is a 17th-century addition). To the right of the entrance to the crypt is the painted wooden tomb of the founder, Prince Vratislav. Climb the ornate stairway for a good view of the faded 13th-century frescos, depicting the Heavenly Jerusalem, in the apse, and of the equally striking Renaissance paintings in the Chapel of St Ludmilla.
Some of the original altar panels from the Basilica have been preserved in the Convent next door, which has an exceptionally rich collection of religious painting and sculpture from the 14th century, widely regarded as the golden age of Bohemian art. Look out for two artists active in the reign of Charles IV: the Master of the Vyšší Brod Altar and Master Theodoric, whose lustrous portraits of the saints were intended for the chapel of Karlštejn Castle. The carved wooden sculptures come from churches all over Bohemia and convey an astonishing range of emotions, from the despairing anguish of the Jedlka Pietà to the maternal playfulness of the Krumlov Madonna, while the crucifixion tableaux have a dramatic intensity reminiscent of a medieval mystery play.
The collection of baroque painting features artists such as Karel Škréta, Petr Brandl and Jan Kupecky, and the sculptors Matthias Braun, Ferdinand Brokoff and Ignaz Platzer.
