Most impressive at night when its gaunt, black steeples are eerily lit, Our Lady before Týn is the Old Town parish church. Although building started in 1380 under the supervision of Petr Parléř, work on the towers was not completed until 1511. For most of that period Týn Church was the stronghold of the Hussite Utraquists, who insisted on taking communion in both kinds (the symbolic gilded chalice which hung from the gable was melted down after the Counter-Reformation to make an effigy of the Virgin). The beautifully sculpted portal dates from 1390. The gloomy interior is an uneasy marriage of Gothic and baroque styles. Over the high altar are paintings by Karol Škréta, dating from 1640-60, while Gothic features include a pietà, a 15th-century pulpit and a pewter font (1414). In front of the high altar is the tomb of the Danish astronomer, Tycho Brahe (1546-1601).
