These delightful gardens were laid out in 1534 in the style of the Italian Renaissance. Four years later, work began on the Belvedere, the handsome summer house presented by Ferdinand I to his wife, Anna Jagiello. A magnificent arcaded building with a copper roof resembling an upturned ship's hull, it was completed in 1564 by Paolo Della Stella, who also designed the mythological reliefs. The palace is now used for exhibitions. The sgraffitoed Ball Game Hall at the eastern end of the gardens is the work of the Czech architect, Bonifaz Wohlmut, and was given its name by courtiers who played a form of tennis here. Tulips grow in the gardens every spring - another reminder of Ferdinand I, who introduced the flower to Europe from Turkey in the 16th century. Near the entrance is the Lion's Court, once a menagerie exhibiting bears, panthers, tigers and other wild beasts.
