Originally a Renaissance temple, built in 1591 for Mayor Mordechai Maisel, financier to Emperor Rudolph II, the synagogue has a beautifully restored interior, which preserves some of the 16th-century stone carving.
The building is now used to house an exhibition of sacred religious objects, which include items associated with the focus of Jewish worship - the Torah. This consists of the five books of Moses, handwritten on rolls of parchment by scribes. By tradition the rollers would be elaborately decorated with filials, shields and crowns, superbly wrought in silver or brass and often gilded or encrusted with jewels. Examples of the richly embroidered mantles in which the Torah was wrapped are also on display in the synagogue, along with other items such as spice boxes, silver goblets, paintings and engravings. But the most unusual exhibit is an enormous glass beaker, made in 1783-4 for the Prague Burial Society and painted with a procession of men and women dressed in funereal black.
