As early as the 12th century Old Town Square was a thriving market place. Merchants from all over Europe conducted their business here and in the Ungelt, a courtyard behind the Týn Church. The square was also a place of execution: among the victims were the Hussite rebel Jan Želivský and the 27 Protestant noblemen who died here following the Battle of the White Mountain in 1620 (they are commemorated by white crosses set in the pavement in front of Old Town Hall). Jan Hus, the father of Czech Protestantism, died in Constance, but his monument, a stark sculpture by Ladislav Šaloun (1915), stands in the centre of the square.
Today Old Town Square is primarily a place of entertainment where buskers and street traders vie with circus acts and side-shows, and the Astronomical Clock on the Old Town Hall performs its mesmerising hourly routine. But the square's chief glory is its architecture: the Renaissance and baroque façades of the houses, painted in pastel shades, conceal Gothic substructures and Romanesque cellars; many are decorated with sculpted house signs and other emblems. The beautiful rococo embellishments on the Golz-Kinsky Palace, dating from 1765 (No 12 east side) are by Kilian Dientzenhofer. Franz Kafka went to school here in the 1890s. Directly in front of the Týn Church, the ribbed vaulting in the 14th-century Týn School arcade has survived.
