One of the oldest Jewish burial grounds in Europe, the Old Jewish cemetery was founded in the early 15th century: the earliest grave, belonging to Rabbi Avigdor Kara, dates from 1439. There are approximately 12,000 tombstones sprouting obliquely from the earth like so many broken and decaying teeth. Beneath them lie more than 100,000 bodies, buried layer upon layer in the confined space. The cemetery closed in 1787. This was the last resting place of many prominent members of the Jewish community, including Rabbi Jehuda Löw (1609), legendary inventor of the Golem, the mayor and philanthropist, Mordechai Maisel (1601) and the renowned scholar, Rabbi David Openheim (1736). The earliest headstones are of sandstone and have plain inscriptions, but from the 17th century they are decorated with carved marble reliefs indicating the trade or status of the deceased - for example, a pair of scissors for a tailor.
