A Walk Around Josefov

The area to the north of the Old Town, now known as Josefov, was first settled by Jews in the 13th century. Most of the surviving sights and monuments date from the 16th and 17th centuries.

Start in Maiselova, heading away from Old Town Square, and pass the Maisel Synagogue. At the crossroads, turn left onto Široká. On your right is the Pinkas Synagogue.

The Maisel Synagogue has an exhibition of ceremonial silverware from Bohemia and Moravia. The Pinkas Synagogue is now a memorial to Holocaust victims.

Leave by the back entrance of the Pinkas Synagogue, which leads into the Old Jewish Cemetery.

The oldest graves here date from the 15th century. At the opposite gate is the Ceremonial Hall and the Klausen Synagogue.

Walk east along Ust Hřbitova Červená to the junction with Maiselova.

On your right you will find the late baroque Town Hall, now the Jewish Community Centre, the High Synagogue and the 13th-century step-gabled Old-New Synagogue

Continue along Ust Hřbitova Červená between the synagogues, then turn right onto Pařížská. Turn left at Široká and cross Dušní to Vňská.

Moorish-style motifs decorate the interior of the Spanish Synagogue (on the corner), which dates from 1867-8.
