A Walk Along the Royal Route

This walk follows the processional route taken by the kings and queens of Bohemia at their coronation.

Start at Obecní Dům and head down Celetná to Staroměstské náměstí.

The leading burghers and dignitaries of the town rode out to welcome their new monarch at the Powder Gate, before accompanying him past the cheering crowds on Celetná to Old Town Square. Here the procession halted to hear professions of loyalty from the rector of the University and the mayor and council in the Town Hall.

Cross the square to Malé náměstí and on to Karlova. At the end of Karlova, cross Křižovnická to Krížovnícké náměstí and the Charles Bridge.

Today Karlova is a quaint, twisting street, lined with galleries and souvenir shops, overshadowed by the fortress-like walls of the former Jesuit stronghold, the Klementinum. As the procession passed the Church of St Francis the King was greeted by the Order of the Knights of the Cross with the Red Star.

Cross the River Vltava to Mostecká and follow Malostranské náměstí round onto Nerudova. Climb the hill to the Castle.

At the Lesser Quarter Bridge Tower, the mayor handed over the keys to the city and the King then continued through Malostranské náměstí to the tumultuous sound of bells from St Nicholas's Church. The processional route ends at the Matthias Gate, the ceremonial entrance to Prague Castle.
