A Walk Through the Lesser Quarter
From Malostranská metro station take Valdstejnská to Valdstejnské náměstí. The square is named after the Imperial commander, Albrecht von Valdstein, whose palace straddles the east side. Behind the Ledebour Palace (No 3) are two attractive terraced gardens (open to the public), hugging the slopes below Prague Castle. Take Tomásská to Malostranské náměstí. Walk along the east side of the square to Karmelitska. Before crossing to Malostranské náměstí, stop to admire Dientzenhoffer's baroque church, St Thomas's. The lower part of the square was once the site of a gallows and pillory. Now café tables spill out onto the pavement outside the Town Hall. Leave the square by Karmelitska and continue past Tritě to the Church of Our Lady Victorious which contains the celebrated statue of Il Bambino di Praga. On the corner of Tritě you pass the Vrtba Palace, which has a delightful terraced garden, constructed around 1720. Cross Karmelitska and turn left down Harantova. Walk through Maltézké náměstí and turn right onto Velkopřevorské náměstí, which leads down to the river. Beyond the Lennon Wall and the approach to the Vltava is a little bridge crossing the Čertovka (Devil's Stream). On your left is the waterwheel of the Grand Prior's Mill, which, in common with much of the area, belonged to the Order of the Knights of Malta. Turn right and follow the river to most Legii, where you can catch a tram back to the centre.
