Forested paths and peak trails are the main attraction of the Krkonoše (Giant) Mountains, 150km northwest of Prague. One of the most popular routes is along the ridge from Harrachov to Sněžka, following the Polish border. (There are year-round chair lifts to the upper slopes.) This is a good area for bird-watching: alpine accentors and water pipits can be seen on the higher ridges, nutcrackers and woodpeckers on the wooded slopes. The park's administrative centre is at Vrchlabi, but Špindlerův, Mlyn and Rec pod Snežkou are all good bases from which to explore the area.
