The Bohemian Lakeland
There are more than 6,000 fish ponds in the area around Třeboň, many of them laid out in the 16th century by Štěpánek Netolicky and Mikulas Rathard, fishmasters to the Romberks, who owned the land. South of Třeboň is the Svět lake, where locals like to swim and go windsurfing in hot weather. The best way to enjoy the surrounding countryside is to hire a bike - the flat, marshy terrain is a rich habitat for toads and dragonflies and for water birds such as grebes, wildfowl and herons. |
