The sweeping Spanish Steps, designed in 1720 to connect the piazza with the French church of Trinità dei Monti, are now usually smothered with tourists, Italian soldiers and street-vendors who compete for space with tubs of magnolias in springtime and a life-size nativity scene at Christmas. The piazza gets its name from the Spanish Embassy which was here in the 17th century, and has been a compulsory stop for visitors to Rome since the 18th and 19th centuries when local tradesmen, models, unemployed servants and beggars mingled hopefully with the foreign artists, writers and Grand Tourists who congregated here. Keats lived and died in an apartment here. The low-lying Fontana della Barcaccia (fountain of the broken boat) at the bottom of the steps was designed by Pietro Bernini, father of the more famous Gian Lorenzo, in 1627 for Barberini Pope Urban VIII; the bees and suns were taken from the Barberini family crest. To the southeast, in Piazza Mignanelli, is a statue of the Virgin Mary on top of a column. This was erected in 1857 when Pope Pius IX proclaimed the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception, holding that the Virgin was the only person ever to have been born without original sin.
