Viewing Rome Features Essence Time Line Peace & Quiet * Parks and Gardens * Roman Wildlife * National Park Famous People Wild Cats Although not exactly wild, Rome is famous for its cats, many of whom live in the streets or among the ruins relying on the goodwill of local people, or informal cat protection organisations, to feed them. The recent increase in these charitable souls may have something to do with the increasing boldness of some of the local rats (although don't worry, you are no more likely to come across a rat than you are in any other major city). |
Peace & Quiet
Rome is not a quiet city. Heavy traffic and vast numbers of tourists combine to make sightseeing a tiring, sometimes stressful, business, particularly in the spring, early summer and autumn. But do not despair, even in the packed historic centre it is possible to come across havens of peace - a little piazza or quiet alley - where you can sit for a moment or two. Some of the sights themselves are often relatively tranquil. The Palatino, Piazza Farnese, the Terme di Caracalla and Circo Massimo, for example, are usually fairly empty, and on the hill above Circo Massimo the town's rose garden will refresh your senses and restore your energy levels.
