The south also is the center of Sweden's industrial powerhouse. The main cities are Gothenburg (Göteborg) and Malmö on the southwest coast. The southernmost province, Skåne, is a rich farming area where you will find a hint of Danish features, both in the people and in the landscape. This is Sweden's vacation land. Off the east coast, the islands of Gotland and Öland have superb beaches that benefit from calm waters and warm summer sunshine. Stockholm lies on the east coast of Sweden, within a beautiful mosaic of inland lakes and offshore islands. In the surrounding provinces there is a richly varied countryside centered on mighty Lake Mälaren. North of Stockholm is Sweden's ancient capital, the lively university town of Uppsala. This entire area is accessible by ferries and cruise boats that ply a network of waterways and lakes. Northern Sweden is known as Norrland, with similarities to northern Finland, and it enjoys the same “Land of the Midnight Sun” tag. It is a country of vast forests and tumbling rivers that are fed by icy, crystal waters from the mountains. Lapland, or Sápme, is a vast and magnificent wilderness of mountains, moorland, birch forest and tundra.
