Souvenirs and Entertainment

Santiago's streets are lined with stores selling pilgrim souvenirs - medals, rosaries, key rings, holy pictures and statues, all decorated with the image of St. James and his scallop shell emblem. The traditional material for pilgrimage souvenirs is jet, polished and cut, or fashioned into the figa, a clenched-fist amulet. The guild of silversmiths, hugely important in the past, is still active and makes some fine pieces.

This is a university town with a thriving cultural life, and there are year-round classical concerts, as well as clubs frequented by students. You'll hear bagpipes, Galicia's national instrument, played on the streets; this is a favorite way for students to make extra cash.
