Vast, rich and harmoniously balanced, it was built between 1401 and 1507, a blend of Gothic austerity and Spanish flamboyance. Almost as wide as it is long, the interior is dominated by the chancel, the Capilla Mayor, its splendidly carved Flemish altarpiece glistening with gold leaf behind immense grilles. Opposite lie the choir stalls. Stand between the two and look up at the transept roof, 184 feet above your head; this riot of stone filigree is supported by massive arches and columns, but even these are dwarfed by the scale of the cathedral. Other highlights include Christopher Columbus' tomb in the south transept; the treasury and sacristy, packed with paintings and precious altar vessels; and the domed Royal Chapel, the burial place of Alfonso X of Castille.
