10 Victoria and Alfred Waterfront, Cape Town
A complex of specialist shops, cinemas, museums, restaurants and hotels makes up Cape Town's ever-popular Victoria and Alfred Waterfront. In just ten years, from the early 1990s, a handful of rundown buildings in Cape Town harbour have metamorphosed into the country's premier tourist attraction, the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront. Several factors contribute to its success: the architecture and the superb views, but perhaps most important of all, the peculiar charm of the combination of genuine working harbour and leisure spot. The Waterfront offers a wide spectrum of entertainment - a choice of cinemas, one with a five-storey-high IMAX screen, a theatre, a sports café, nightclubs, and music venues, the best-known being the Green Dolphin for jazz. In summer you can watch buskers and listen to live music in the outdoor amphitheatre. The complex also has dozens of eating places, ranging from fast-food outlets, to steakhouses, pizzerias, seafood bars and expensive restaurants. The most atmospheric of the pubs is Ferryman's Tavern, housed in a converted warehouse. Although prices in the shops here seem expensive to locals, they are reasonable if you are spending US dollars or European currencies. Outlets offer books, clothing of all sorts, fine foods and wines, electrical goods, gifts, local art and curios. There are also several indoor craft markets. Other places of interest at the Waterfront include the South African Maritime Museum, the floating Victoria Museum Ship, the Two Oceans Aquarium, and the platform next to Bertie's Landing where Cape fur seals bask. Various tours are available from here, too: a sunset cruise in Table Bay, helicopter flights over the Peninsula, and trips around and to Robben Island.Address: Dock Road, Cape Town, Western Cape Phone: 021-408 7600 (information); fax: 021-408 7605; e-mail: info@waterfront.co.za Open: Restaurants, pubs open daily till late; shops open daily, 9-9 Restaurant: Huge variety to choose from (Inexpensive-Expensive) Bus: Buses from Cape Town Station and Sea Point Accessible: Very good Admission: Free Other: Robben Island Practical: Phone for details of musical and other events |
