A Visitor's Strasbourg
Exploring the City Eat, Drink and Enjoy Evening Diversions Malls and Markets |
A Visitor's Strasbourg For tourists, modern everyday Strasbourg need not intrude upon enjoyment of the old city. Aim to stay within the old, mostly pedestrian quarter; it's a delightful place to walk around, with an impressive choice of hotels, bars and restaurants. There's a large presence of European parliamentary officials, many of whom speak English, and the range of English-language tourist literature is excellent. Strasbourg's appeal lies in its combination of history, architecture and culture. First impressions are of a very German city, the timbered houses and cobbled streets reminiscent of villages across the Rhine river, a little to the east. But the atmosphere is definitely French, with the style and way of life that it implies. Lying so near the German border, however, Strasbourg is a favorite destination for day and weekend visits, and you'll see and hear many Germans. |
