Prices
Prices are per room, per night, excluding breakfast: Thailand is blessed with an enormous range of accommodation, from luxury
island resorts to cheap-and-cheerful guest houses.
Toilets Western-style toilets and bathroom facilities are increasingly the norm, but up-country and at smaller or older hotels you may encounter squat toilets with water and a jug rather than toilet paper. Either carry your own paper or learn from the locals and use your right hand to pour and your left to wash with! Many modern toilets have a spray to wash with, as well as toilet paper. Mosquitoes Malaria is a problem near the borders with Myanmar (Burma), Cambodia and Laos, in hilly, forested areas and on certain islands, notably Ko Chang. In big cities you should be safe, although some hotels still offer mosquito nets and it is wise to use a mosquito repellent as a precaution. It is best to ask your GP for the latest advice about whether to take anti-malarial tablets during your visit. Laundry Almost every hotel and guest house offers an efficient, clean and cheap laundry service. Clothing is normally returned washed, dried and ironed within 24 hours, although a faster service is usually available on request. Tax and Tipping Better (or more expensive) hotels generally charge a 10 per cent service charge and 7.5 per cent government tax. Guest houses and more reasonably priced hotels do not charge any tax, nor is tipping required. The same is true in restaurants. Increasingly, however, a small tip is expected, and like anywhere else in the world is much appreciated. Booking Ahead Booking accommodation in advance is easy, whether at the airport, major railway and bus stations, or through the ubiquitous and helpful travel agents. Similarly air, train and bus tickets are all bookable in advance. |
