Introduction

For much of the 20th century, Vienna (Wien) had an air of fading grandeur, a city whose days of imperial glory had truly passed. But in the 1980s Vienna began to redefine itself, and continues to do so. In the last two decades the population has increased for the first time since 1919; a vibrant youth culture has emerged; and the imperial architecture of the 18th and 19th centuries has been joined by exciting modern designs, such as the huge museum quarter built on the site of the emperor's former stables. In this 21st century Vienna seems to be shaking off its torpor and styling itself, once again, as a dynamic European cultural center.
