Sightseeing in York
Shopping in Old York Minster |
Shopping in Old York Shopping in York is fun. Streets such as Stonegate and The Shambles are overflowing with specialty stores, including antiques shops, art and craft galleries, bookstores, jewelers, tea blenders and boutiques. Every major chain store is represented in the main shopping areas of Coney Street, St. Mary's Square and Parliament Street. A huge variety of eateries will tempt you, from traditional English tea and coffee houses - such as Bettys Café Tea Rooms in St. Helen's Square and the Earl Grey Tea Rooms in The Shambles - to dozens of restaurants. Authentic English pubs include Stonegate's Ye Old Starre Inne and the 15th-century Black Swan, on Peasholme Green. York is essentially English at heart, but its northern regional identity makes it very different from London and southern England. Expect friendliness and helpfulness from locals, but be prepared for that matter-of-fact approach for which Yorkshire people are famous. You will be given facts rather than fiction and guidance rather than gossip to help you get the best out of the heartland of historic England. |
