York Castle Museum

This museum is housed in two former prisons. Behind the handsome neoclassic facade of the building is an outstanding collection of exhibits illustrating the social history of York, and of Britain, over the past 400 years. Walkways lead past vivid reconstructions of complete Victorian and Edwardian streets, lined with old stores full of authentic contents. Allow several hours to get the most out of the experience, which also includes a visit to the condemned cell that once held legendary highwayman Dick Turpin.
