Yorkshire Museum
This eclectic treasure house includes some of the finest Roman, Viking, Anglo Saxon and medieval artifacts in Europe. The
grounds feature handsome gardens that contain York's oldest ruin, the Multangular Tower, part of fourth century Roman fortifications.
The luminous Middleham Jewel, a 15th-century sapphire set within a gold pendant, is a major exhibit. Also of interest is a
collection of sea dragons from the Jurassic period. The museum building incorporates part of the ruins of medieval St. Mary's
Abbey. This section, with its haunting reconstructions and medieval music, is a delight.
