Northwest of Orlando and south of Ocala, the Scenic Sumter Heritage Byway shows that Florida is more than beaches and theme parks. The route —S R 50/CR 478/CR 673/CR 76/US 301/CR 470/SR 44 — meanders from Mabel to the Withlacoochee River, alternating between lightly wooded rangelands and cypress swamplands. Agriculture and U.S. military history are represented here.

Pass by moss-draped cypress and oak trees, ranches and small towns on the (mostly) two-lane Scenic Sumter Heritage Byway. Things to see include Sumter County Farmers Market, 516 N.W. 3rd St., in Webster (best on Monday) and a Second Seminole War site, 7200 CR 603, in Bushnell. The Florida National Cemetery, off of SR 4768B in Bushnell, is among the largest in the nation.
