Altoona was first settled in the mid-1700s. A series of stockades, including Fort Roberdeau, was built to protect the region against Native American raids. The region gained settlers and businesses with the completion of the Pennsylvania Canal in 1834, and within several years, the demand for lumber and coal gave rise to the railroad industry. The Allegheny Portage Railroad was founded in Altoona in 1849 during construction of the first railroad over the Alleghenies.
