Austwell was founded in 1911 by Preston Rose Austin, a cotton grower and land developer who owned 20,000 acres along the lower Guadalupe River. Austin combined his name and business partner Jesse McDowell's to create a town designation. Hotels, stores, lumberyards and cotton gins were among Austin's financial stakes in the community; he also donated a school, a church and land for a train station. In 1914, he dredged Hynes Bay to create a shipping channel. Five years later, the town was badly damaged by a storm, and it never recovered from a second deluge in 1942. Learn More...
