In 1534 explorer Jacques Cartier reached the area where Bathurst stands today and established trade with the local Mi'kmaq Indians. Nicholas Denys, governor of the Acadian coast and author of one of its first local histories, lived in Bathurst a century later; a small stone monument to Denys is downtown on Main Street.
