On the province's eastern tip, Bayfield was the staging area for construction of the Confederation Bridge, built in 1997 to link Borden-Carleton on Prince Edward Island with Cape Jourimain, New Brunswick, and the mainland. Construction costs were around $1 billion. The 12.9-kilometre (8-mi.) span is the world's longest over ice-covered waters.
