Clarkston was the final in a series of name changes for this town in Washington's southwestern corner. Residents of neighboring Lewiston, Idaho, named their town for Clark's partner Meriwether Lewis. The noted explorers, assisted by the Nez Perce Indians, spent time at the confluence of the Snake and Clearwater rivers. Petroglyphs dating back some 6,000 years can be seen along Snake River Road, which follows the river south of town; directions are available at the Lewis Clark Valley Chamber of Commerce, 825 6th St.; phone (509) 758-7712 or (800) 933-2128.
