An easy and popular day trip from Seattle, Coupeville is located on Whidbey Island. Established in 1853, it is one of the oldest communities in the state, with several homes that date to the mid-19th century. Three old blockhouses built to defend Puget Sound and settlers' homes from the Coast Salish Indians can be visited. West of town is Madrona Way, a 4-mile scenic route that winds along the shore of Penn Cove. The drive is named for the Pacific madrona, a dark evergreen tree with shaggy, cinnamon-colored bark.
