Eatonton was the birthplace in 1848 of Joel Chandler Harris, creator of the popular children's characters Uncle Remus, Brer Fox, Brer Bear and Brer Rabbit. A statue of Brer Rabbit on Courthouse Square commemorates Harris' works; many originals are displayed at the Uncle Remus Museum .
