Ione has always been a timber town. Pend Oreille River steamboats linked Washington's northeastern corner with the outside world from the late 1880s until the railroad arrived in 1909. A sawmill built by the Panhandle Lumber Co. opened in this small community in 1901 and by 1909 employed 700 workers; a smaller mill continues to operate on the site. The era of river transportation is fondly recalled during Down River Days the last full weekend in July. The festivities include a parade, a cowboy breakfast and snowmobile races—on the water.
