One hundred and four Englishmen endured a 5-month sea passage to reach the shores of Virginia in 1607. Sponsored by the Virginia Company of London, Jamestown was to be England's first permanent colony in the New World and, it was hoped, a profitable one for its investors. The unfamiliar climate, disease and starvation almost thwarted those plans; less than a third of the settlers survived the first year.
