Founded in the 1840s, Kalama is named for Hawaiian native John Kalama, who settled in the area after marrying the daughter of a Nisqually chief. In addition to being a busy shipping center, Kalama claims two superlatives: a 149-foot single-tree totem pole, in Marine Park, and the first fish hatchery in the state.
