Settled in the 1880s, Kent was first called Titusville in honor of the town's first mayor, James Titus. Hops were the area's major crop, and in 1890 the town was renamed for Kent County, the English hop-growing center. After disease decimated the hop yards in 1895, dairying became the major industry.
