Monmouth traces its beginnings to the mid-1850s, when pioneer settlers from Illinois set aside 640 acres for a town and Christian college, naming the site for their hometown. Established in 1856, Monmouth University was among the first institutions of higher education in the Northwest. The college was not prosperous, however, and was taken over by the state in 1882, becoming a teachers' school.
